What a great week for Nestle.
So, everybody knows that I hate Nestle. For years, the standard reaction to me lecturing people on why they shouldn’t fund this company has been a roll of the eyes, but Nestle’s actions make me so angry that I can’t help myself.
This week, Nestle has come to the front of public attention, so I feel now would be an appropriate time to try recruit some boycotters. If you already hate Nestle then feel free to stop reading here, if you don’t then please read on and find out why you should.
Firstly, Nestle contributes to the unnecessary death and suffering of infants worldwide by forcibly & aggressively pushing breast milk substitutes in the developing world.
The World Health Organisation estimates that 1.5 million children die each year because they are not breastfed.
A major reason why these children aren’t breastfed is because Nestle continually breach international marketing standards (that are in place to protect breastfeeding)to increase its sales of substitute baby milk.
You can read more about that here: http://www.babymilkaction.org/pages/boycott.html
So Nestle are already doing pretty well on the Bastard Scale. Then this week, Greenpeace release information on how Nestle obtain palm oil from a company who destroy Indonesian rainforest (and as a result murder orangoutangs). Here’s a link for you: http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/climate-change/kitkat
Nestle really are outdoing themselves here. Killing babies, killing orangoutangs, raping rainforest. What’s next?
Well, Greenpeace put their video on Youtube and then Nestle made a complaint about breach of copyright, so it got removed.
As a result, Greenpeace uploaded it to Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/10236827) and it started springing up all over the place. Good work internet!
Then, in a genius PR move, Nestle launched a Facebook fan page campaign(http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nestle/24287259392?ref=nf) which, according to PR Week is ” an emergency online PR campaign to restore its reputation amid sustained criticism on the internet”.
It’s going really well for them. Obviously, everyone in the world who has Facebook and is pissed off with Nestle trotted over to their page and told them what bastards they are.
Nestle’s response has been genius.
Whoever the admin on their page is, I feel they are soon about to lose their job. Instead of responding to comments constructively, Nestle’s retort has been to sarcastically abuse anyone who even considers criticising the way in which they conduct themselves.
So, in conclusion, Nestle have had the most disastrous week. Brilliant isn’t it.
Here is a list of all products Nestle make a profit from, please do the right thing and choose other brands / services. Thank you. http://www.babymilkaction.org/pages/products.html
